Here are the highlights of the FIM Moto 2 race from Jerez.
Marc Marquez has pole for the Moto 2 race. He won the most recent round of the series in Qatar, a few weeks ago. The bikes have gone out on their formation lap before the race start. This is going to be a hotly contested race for sure.
At the start, Marquez loses spots and into the lead goes Thomas Luthi. Tito Rebaque runs wide. Toni Elias is in 11th place no. Scott Redding passed Mika Kallio. Pol Espargaro has been barging his way around through the field. Meanwhile, Toni Elias has come all the way to eighth place. Switzerland's Randy Krummenacher and Mike DiMeglio have both been competitively running with the leaders for last lap or so in this 24 lap race. Scott Redding passes Pol Espargaro. Luthi is in the lead at this point. Toni Elias gets passed by Claudio Corti. A scrap ensues between Scott Redding and Mike DiMeglio. Luthi leads ahead of a couple former 125cc championship. Marques passes DiMeglio.
Randy Krumenacher is ahead of Pol Espargaro. Krumenacher sets fast lap of the race. Marques is catching the leaders. Andrea Iannone is far behind at this point. Marquez runs a new fast lap at 1:45.2. Twenty laps remain. Randy Krumenacher is now quickest, one second behind Marc Marquez. Rain could be imminent in this race. But it's hard to tell right now. Marques is patiently working on Scott Redding. Redding is quicker. Thomas Luthi is falling back. He could be concerned about spots of rain on his visor.
Redding takes the lead. There are four bikes battling for the lead spot. Tito Rabat crashed and fortunately recovered his bike and pitted. Krumenacher just crashed! He was fourth, going after Tom Luthi. Gino Rea is moving up. Apparently, DiMeglio also crashed at the same time as Rebaque did. DiMeglio, out. Redding leads Espargro. There are some major rivalries in this division between certain riders. Toni Elias is also moving up. Mika Kalio is booking it right now. The battle continues. It's Redding vs. Marques. Marques slides down the outside of Redding and Redding doesn't fight it.
So, Marquez retakes the lead into Dry Sac. Luthi also passes Marques. The top five riders all battle for the lead coming to halfway in the race. Marquez has a close shave in Sito Pons corner. Then they move through Alex Crevile corner and Ferrari corner. Luthi and Redding side-by-side! Luthi continues to lead. This is a close race for sure. Marques vs. Redding continues. Mika Kallio still holds fifth. No change. Marques passes Redding back and into turn one, Pol Espargaro is also making hay while the sun shines.
Into Dry Sac, Espargaro passing Redding. Kallio went off at turn seven and continued. Scott Redding is dropping behind Marques and Espargaro. Redding is fourth and Kalio is sixth. A lap has been subtracted from the counter due to weather concerns. This race will go 26 instead of 27 laps. There's shuffling between Xavier Simeon and Alex de Angelis. Takaaki Nagami is currently shown fifth. Marques is coming. His team is managed and led by former 125cc racer Emilio Alzamora.
This race might just be cut short as Nakagami and Redding battle into Sito Pons corner. There's more rain coming and it's likely Moto 2 will have the race cut short. This event took place before the MotoGP race highlighted here earlier this morning. The red flag is out. The problem is that the scoring needs to be checked. Pol Espargaro may be the winner. Not sure. The marshals are discussing what's going on. Pol Espargaro could very well win this thing. Bingo! He does.
#40 Pol Espargaro ESP Kalex
Next race: Portugal, Estoril
