MotoGP:
MotoGP is the Formula One of motorcycle racing. These are the most technologically advanced motorcycles in the world. The 2012 season starts right now!
The new 1 liter motor era of MotoGP begins in this race. Three American riders are in the series. Ben Spies, Nicky Hayden, and Colin Edwards. Aussie Casey Stoner is the defending champion. Honda, Yamaha and Ducati are the three main manufacturers with factory teams. Suzuki is now out of the series. There are also privately entered bikes. In qualifying, Colin Edwards had the fastest CRT bike. Nicky Hayden was fifth. Ben Spies was on a fast lap but went down, getting his arm trapped between the ferring and the bike.
Jorge Lorenzo scores pole, breaking Casey Stoner's streak. Andrea Dovizioso and Stefan Braml were fast. Randy de Puniet and Valentino Rossi were quick. Some of these riders are on CRT bikes which are more production based and more affordable than a true racing bike. The Losail track is 3.3 miles long. Sand is going to be a factor, blowing over from the desert. Let's go MotoGP racing!
22 laps are scheduled. At the start, Stoner and Ben Spies both get a jump as Jorge Lorenzo and Danny Pedrosa also want to get into the action. Cal Crutchlow sank to seventh as Andrea Dovizioso moved up. Jorge Lorenzo is up in front. Ben Spies is under pressure from Dovizioso. Karel Abraham is also in contention. Dani Pedrosa tries holding off Stoner. Stefan Bradl passes Nicky Hayden for seventh place. Bradl passes Spies. Bradl is the reigning Moto 2 champ. Pedrosa and Stoner are still going at it.
The bikes are back on the 1 kilometer front straight. Stoner wants by Pedrosa. Stoner is lapping in the 1:55 range. Flames fly out of Lorenzo's Yamaha's exhaust. Cal Crutchlow is on top of fourth place Dovizioso. Can Casey Stoner extend his lead? Cal Crutchlow is reeling in Dovizioso. Stoner is really good in sector three. Stefan Braml is also right up here. Nicky Hayden hassles Ben Spies. Randy De Puniet is also going well right now.
Casey Stoner still leads. Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies are falling down the field. James Ellison and Michele Pirro are running at the back of the grid. Ellison on the Aprilia seems to be down on speed. Karel Abraham may have crashed. Pedrosa ran his personal best lap. Colin Edwards leads the CRT bikes. Valentino Rossi is ahead, but he's having some issues. Edwards' bike was having electrical problems in practice. Crutchlow keeps battling Dovizioso, but can't make it work.
These bikes are faster by far than Moto 2 and Moto 3. Cal Crutchlow is moving in on his team mate. Michele Pirro pits. He's got a tire issue and needs to switch to a softer one on the front. Crutchlow seems quicker than Dovizioso. They are team mates (I think). Dovizioso is a very hard rider to overtake. Alvaro Bautista is running with Nicky Hayden for seventh spot. Michele Pirro's tire issues also are affecting the body of his bike.
Colin Edwards is ahead in the CRT category. Supermoto veteran Yanni Hernandez is running well in his first race in MotoGP. The Crutchlow/Dovizioso scrap continues for fourth. The race is half over. Eleven of 22 laps are run. Cal Crutchlow still can't get by Andrea Dovizioso. Nicky Hayden, Alvaro Bautista and Hector Barbera follow in the back half of the top eight. Alvaro Bautista needs to catch Hayden and Barbera is closing. Stoner is on top, but coming back, is Dovizioso. Seven laps left. There's still 1/3 left.
Colin Edwards is slowest running in the 2:01 bracket. Nicky Hayden and Alvaro Bautista continue their battle. Casey Stoner continues in the lead. Dani Pedrosa wants to battle Jorge Lorenzo. Lorenzo is quicker. Bradl, Hayden, Bautista and Barbera all tussle. Bradl needs to be aware of the veterans. Meanwhile, Crutchlow FINALLY passes Dovizioso! That scrap has been going on for the whole race. Danilo Petrucci on bike #9 is having issues. Meanwhile, it will be a three way fight for the win with four laps to go. It's a three way fight to the finish!
Dani Pedrosa passes Jorge Lorenzo. They are reeling in Casey Stoner. It seems like it will be a Repsol Honda 1-2. It's Honda vs. Yamaha. Lorenzo passes Stoner! Can he come back? Three laps left in the Qatar Grand Prix. Jorge Lorenzo is rocketing into the distance. Stoner blocks Pedrosa. Lorenzo still hasn't won MotoGP in Qatar. He did win in the old 125cc and 250cc classes. Pedrosa had a lurid slide with his rear wheel bouncing upwards! He held on!
Former five time MotoGP world champion Mick Doohan looks on. Hector Barbera passed Nicky Hayden. It's the final lap. Barbera ran really wide and stayed on the bike. But he's out of contention. Meanwhile, Jorge Lorenzo dominates! He will win the Grand Prix!
Winner: #99 Jorge Lorenzo SPA Yamaha
